一位法國出生的建築師皮爾〈Pierre Charles L'Enfant〉 設計了一個充滿紀念堂及寬廣大道的首都，他當時所設計的一百呎寬及一英哩長的的街道讓人不能接受，但是華盛頓同意了他的設計。
